Plymouth Rock would land on them.

“Anything Goes” was written by Cole Porter for the 1934 musical of the same name. The musical has run a number of times on Broadway and in the West-End, but certain songs have stood through each version.

The 1934 Broadway version starred Ethel Merman as Reno Sweeney, the first to perform the song and make it a showstopper. Patti LuPone took ownership of the character in the ’87 Broadway revival, but today it is most associated with Sutton Foster who won a Tony Award for her performance.

More fun, though, is that “Anything Goes” is the song used in the opening scene of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, a fitting choice for American show girl Willie Scott (Kate Capshaw) in a Chinese Nightclub in 1934.
