The further I go into my leadership quest, the more I understand this quote from Jean-Luc Picard. Perhaps this is wisdom?

“It is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose. That is not a weakness, that is life.”

Jean-Luc Picard, “Peak Performance”
(Star Trek: The Next Generation S2E21)

In the episode’s B-plot, the android data plays a game against a universe-leading master, and loses. The android is puzzled by the loss, noting he made no mistakes while playing but was still beaten in the match. After sulking and humanity searching for two acts, the Captain finally explains life to the Android.

Life, Sports, Games, Work, anything we do, have outside factors. And sometimes these factors, however insignificant, have an impact on the outcome. Any good poker player will confirm that you can only play the cards you’re dealt, and sometimes you just don’t have enough to win.

Always playing to win means there will always be a winner and loser. Sometimes, the best available outcome isn’t going to be a win, and you just need to play for a draw.
