He who jumps into the void owes no explanation to those who stand and watch.
-Jean Luc Godard (1930-2022)
Godard was a pioneer of the French New Wave of cinema in the 1960’s, transforming movies by rejecting tradition and finding new ways of telling stories.
The quote is a fun one for me. Whenever you’re attempting something new, people always ask questions. The more revolutionary the idea, the more interest it generates.
We can get caught up in the discussions surrounding novel ideas. Sometimes they are truly conversations sparked by genuine curiosity. Other times, the questions are thinly veiled attempts to solicit justifications to satisfy those who ask.
Godard’s reminder here is very simple. If you are taking bold risks, jumping into the void as he put it, you don’t need to justify your actions to those who aren’t going in with you.
