The Blues Brothers (1980).

At the height of their Saturday Night Live fame, Dan Akroyd and John Belushi created “The Blues Brothers” characters from their shared love of blues music. Akroyd was always a life-long fan of the genre, and introduced it to Belushi during their time on SNL. What started as a live performance in a skit quickly moved into an entire live album, covering the blues standards of the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s.
The success of The Blues Brothers wasn’t just due to the star power of Akroyd and Belushi, but the cast of musicians and stars who took part in the film:
- Paul Shaffer
- James Brown
- Cab Calloway
- Ray Charles
- Aretha Franklin
- Carrie Fisher
- John Candy
- John Lee Hooker
- Frank Oz
- Pinetop Perkins
- Steve Lawrence
- Twiggy
- Steven Speilberg
- Joe Walsh
- Chaka Khan
- Paul Reubens (Pee-Wee Herman)
The Blues Brothers was set in Chicago, and shot on location all over the city, adding to its blues credentials and aura. This alone makes it a top entry in the catalog of definitive “Chicago” movies.
